In this guide we will teach you how to prepare for a solar flare, or more specifically a coronal mass ejection. With all the buzz coming out of Fox News, and the United Kingdom Cabinet Office’s Space Weather Preparedness Strategy Department we thought it’d be a good time to write an article for our readers. Helping you understand what this means to you, if you should be genuinely concerned, and what steps you can take to prepare for such an event…
What is a Solar Flare
In case you didn’t notice it, our little blue planet is heated by our nearest star we call the Sun, which in essence is a star fueled by hydrogen gas and thermonuclear fusion creating a 14 million C° burning ball of light. Unfortunately, our beautiful burning star that keeps strippers, and Laguna beach bums looking like they were rode hard and put away wet will emit solar flares..
Solar flares are believed to occur when the Sun’s opposing magnetic fields interact adversely abruptly releasing large amounts of energy equivalent to 160,000,000,000 megatons of TNT, followed by (not always) a colossal coronal mass ejection emits clouds of electrons, ions, and atoms (radiation) almost at the speed of light through the corona of the Sun into outer space.
Are Solar Flares Dangerous
Like all potential survival threats, how you interpret solar flares and their potential effect on you is purely speculative. For instance, if you’re in a farming area you with little to no electrical and telecom reliance you most likely won’t be directly affected. However, if you’re living in New York – you might be fucked. Now, before you get your panties in a twist, a solar flare is harmless to Earth’s living organisms because we are protected from solar flares by our magnetic field and atmosphere. So why are solar flares dangerous?
While our physical lives might not be at risk by a solar flare with a massive coronal ejection, our technology, one of the main things that keeps our society in order is very susceptible to the dangerous effects of a solar flare…
“Power outages would be accompanied by radio blackouts and satellite malfunctions; telecommunications, GPS navigation, banking and finance, and transportation would all be affected,” – NASA noted in a Press Release
You might not know, but in addition to the warnings listed in the NASA Press Release America’s power grid system is a national disaster waiting to happen. Were a solar flare’s massive coronal ejection to point directly at the United States it would cause one of the most crippling disasters in the history of our country to include;
- water distribution would surely be affected
- perishable foods and medications would be lost within 12-24 hours
- heating and air conditioning would be non existent
- cell towers along with land lines would be disabled
- fuel shortages
- loss in power
What will happen if a Solar Flare happens in America
Chaos brother, unbelievable amounts of chaos will ensue. Should we be hit so hard as to take out all the everyday necessities listed above this country will eat itself alive, just like it has time after time when disaster strikes. Let’s face it guys, the America of today is populated by some really selfish, ignorant, and truly immoral people who are just waiting for our great country to fall. Unfortunately there are several possible scenarios that will follow such a massive coronal ejection;
- martial law
Should I Prepare for a Solar Flare
Luckily, if you’re an avid prepper you most likely have most the tools needed to be prepped for such an event, and if you haven’t maybe you should. However, this survival threat ranks about a 6 on the threat gauge mainly because we have gone from only 60 minutes of preparation time to 12 hours, allowing energy and utility companies to downgrade services and prepare for the disruption. However, if a big enough one hits, no amount of warning will matter.
How do I prepare for a Solar Flare
Believe it or not we wrote something more detail oriented, and would better prepare you to deal with such an event in our article ‘How to prepare for an EMP’, but we’ll still go over a few basic precautions you and your family can take;
- faraday cage – to keep your cell phones, laptops, hard drives, etc in
- solar battery charger – to charge batteries for lights, medical equipment
- generator – to power home appliances
- 1 week food and 1 week water – until services are restored
- alternate light source – until power is restored
However, if you think that things will be a ‘worse case scenario’ you need to check out the rest of our articles that will teach you how to defend your home, defend yourself, and to dig in for the long haul.
